Food Grade Plastic Barrels – What You Need to Know

Food Grade Plastic Barrels

Are you interested in shipping or storing foodstuffs? If so, then you want to consider purchasing food grade plastic barrels or drums. Food grade plastic most commonly refers to plastic that has been approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and in some cases other food and health agencies, for use in food packaging. There are many different types of plastics available in the market, just as there are many different types of metals, and each one serves a particular purpose, so it’s important to be able to understand what food grade plastic is and what its uses are.

Most plastics you’ll encounter are typically marked with a Resin Identification Code (RIC). Generally, the RIC can be found marked at the bottom of the plastic in question and is easily identified as a number within a triangle. This figure serves to determine the type of resin used to make the plastic. Knowing what type of resin the plastic is made of makes it easy to know what type of application the plastic is best suited for. In the case of shipping or storing foodstuffs, plastics with an RIC of #2 (High-Density Polyethylene), #4 (Low-Density Polyethylene), and #5 (Polypropylene) are generally considered safe for use in food and drink. Another number that is often seen on drink containers is #1 (Polyethylene Terephthalate).

High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is known best in the food industry. Many of the large food grade plastic containers that are used by restaurants are made from this type of plastic. However, that does not mean that all containers made from HDPE are food grade plastic. In fact, when purchasing an HDPE plastic container, you should always check to see if the container has also been marked as food safe or food grade. If you’re unsure, then you should check with the manufacturer. An HDPE container that is not food safe may potentially release chemicals, damaging any food stored inside the container and becoming potentially unsafe for human consumption. It goes without saying that if a food safe barrel or container is used for any other non-food purpose (such as chemical storage), then it automatically becomes non-food safe.

Food grade plastic barrels and containers are tested on several different levels before receiving their RIC. Along with making sure that the plastic used in the production of the barrel or container will not cause any harm to the food, the FDA also run tests to ensure that the plastic doesn’t affect the taste, look, or smell of the food.  The government has strict regulations on the use of recycled plastic materials in the use of food grade containers.
